After a great first week of the 30 Day Short Story Challenge, we continue our efforts to help you feel better, one story at a time. Here is what you can look forward to in week 2!

FRI – Durga Writes to her Father by Devdutt Patnaik

The goddess Durga writes a letter to her father wondering if she should visit his home this year. This is a thought-provoking story with a contemporary twist from India’s greatest mythologist to celebrate the auspicious day of Ashtami. (3)

SAT – The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry

The story tells of a young husband and wife and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money. A Christmas story, it explores selflessness and true love. (4)

SUN – Kumari Devi by Benyamin

The maid Chanku found for Gopiettan and Geetha aunty turned out to be an ex-goddess. This could only mean trouble. Written by JCB Prize winner Benyamin, it promises to be an interesting tale. 


MON – The Adventure of the Speckled Band by Arthur Conan Doyle

The story tells of Helen Stoner, a soon-to-be married young woman who suspects her stepfather may be trying to kill her in order to retain control of her inheritance. Convinced of her stepfather’s intentions, she turns to Holmes for help. (2)

TUE – My Trophy Wife by Debeshi Gooptu

Is Ela just a pawn in her ‘perfect’ marriage to Ranjan? Debeshi Gooptu tells the story of a woman who compromised for too long and decided to break free when things went too far. (1)

WED – Fisherman by Mahasweta Devi

Jagat the fisherman no longer spreads his net to get a catch. There is no more fish left in the tank. He dives for other more terrible things. (5)

 THUR – The White Sari by Devyani Khobragade

Every 6 December, on the day of Maha Parinirvan, Ratna accompanies her father to Chaitya Bhumi where Babasaheb’s ashes are enshrined. On one such momentous occasion, Ratna met Akarsh, the love of her life. The only problem was that she was a Dalit and he was not…
